Games I Like – MERCS – Review – Free Campaign Expansion!

Well I have finally reached my long anticipated winter vacation and I find myself sitting on the couch, watching bad holiday television and catching up on new things from my favorite miniature games which I haven’t yet really perused.

First on the list was finally sitting down to an in-depth read through of the Beta 1.1 of the MERCS Campaign rules.

If you haven’t downloaded them yet, just jump over HERE and download it for yourself.

Here’s a quick overview of the system;

– It is map based, with different maps provided to support number of players and complexity in the campaign

– Your MERCS Team and MegaCon starts at a base level, not as experienced as in standard games of MERCS. You begin with a Leader and 2 Assault Troopers (your choice) on your fireteam. New team members can be recruited and unlocked through research. I like this ‘developing’ team building structure as it creates a fun narrative as your squad develops.

– Other benefits not available in standard games can ALSE be researched and purchased for your squad.

– Two kinds of currency exist; credits and resources. Both have benefits and can be used as a way to expand and develop your MegaCon.

– 7 Scenarios are provided to play through. They look like a great deal of fun and change the game table from a 2×2′ to 2×3’… making your games quite different each time.

– A fairly free-form ‘Diplomatic’ phase encourages deal-making and backstabbing. There are a few rules to protect people trading goods with each other but for the most part this phase really helps capture the ‘corporate’ wheeling and dealing you’d expect in this dystopian future.

– It does NOT require a GM. While a Campaign organizer will always help keep such things smooth, nothing about the system would stop him from participating as well.

Overall the campaign looks replayable and fun. I’m excited to print the maps and give it a go at some point with my painted teams. Now I’ve just got to find some players to try it out with me!
