Games I Like – Anima Tactics – Lightbox 2.0 is functional… first model photographed is Goethia!

One of the things left behind in my recent move to the US was my home-made light box. These things are super-cheap and easy to make, but pretty essential to decent miniature photography.

All you need is the following;

– 1 Sheet of white Foamcore
– A roll of white Duct Tape (eh?)
– Some tracing paper.
– A cutting mat
– A nice sharp hobby knife
– A steel ruler and triangle
– A glue stick
– A gradient background (which sadly I still lack)

I cut mine to fit a standard 8.5×11 inch printed background. Three 10×12″ rectangles of foamcore and two 10×8 inch sides. Cut openings on the top and sides and glue stick down the tracing paper. These will diffuse the lamp-light from three directions and get rid of shadows. I use duct tape to put the box together as its robust and keeps the edges from getting worn. Then simply print your desired gradient background (I simply make a 8.5×11 gradient fill in Photoshop) and glue stick it curved upwards inside the box. Voila! Some lamps with daylight bulbs and you’re off to the races.

To inaugurate it I took a quick shot of my newly painted Goethia Gear for Anima tactics. Just like the Grimorium I decided to give it an ancient-metal look. The base is Vallejo Brass with a dry brush of Oily Metal. I then liberally wash it with Citadel Ogryn Flesh and highlight it again with Oily Steel.

Sadly the printer in the little office area of my Condo is only black and white, so the grayscale background will have to do until I can print one in colour!
