The final piece of the puzzle was provided in the form of the Orlock Ganger with Autogun and Stub Pistol by the excellent Dave Taylor. He kindly dived into his bins of ancient bits and emerged with not onlythis missing Orlock, but a few other bits and bobs I neede to complete my collection… and a very generous surprise which I will post up when it has been completed. Thanks Dave, you are a gentleman and scholar of the great miniature symmetry!

So here he is, the final Orlock.

Another 2D Perry cast, this Orlock is hedging his bets by carrying a long and short range gun. In addition, he has (I kid you not) armoured sideburns. Models only the 90s Necromunda range could produce.

The group in all their glory. Interestingly, these figures all appear to be outcasts from the four main males gangs. I’ll explain more as I go along.

The first scummer, who I call ‘Nathan’, is clearly a former member of the Goliaths. Cut loose or maybe just sick of all the steroid abuse, he’s on his own armed with a deadly pair of pistols (he kept the chains though!). Another great flat-cast Perry fig, this guy isactually quite dynamic considering his 2D style.

Scummer 2 I call ‘Pickles’, and he is clearly an ex VanSaar ganger with his trademark patched Still-Suit and goatee. He’s an interesting choice for 15 creds as he can give a starting gang a Hand Flamer, which was quite deadly in the old rules with Fire!

This one I call ‘Drifter’. Can’t imagine why. He was most likely expelled from the House Delaque gangs for having hair. He’s a great figure, with a few oddites around the ears to make him flat cast with that collar on his coat up, but a lovely fig to paint nonetheless.

Last but not least is ‘Tubbs’. Obviously a former House Orlock ganger, I imagine he was expelled when he got so fat his vest wouldn’t close anymore. He is one of the only fat figures ever sculpted by the Perry’s for Necromunda (the Van Saar heavies being the others) and has a ton of character from his torn shirt to specky face.

These models were GREAT fun to paint. If you’re a Necromunda enthusiast or looking for extra figs for an Inquisitor warband and can get your hands on these, I highly recommend it!

This group represents all but one (!) Orlock Ganger (Autogun and Stubber… I’ll have him this week hopefully!) done by the Perrys during the original release of Necromunda.

‘Old Iron Eye’ is the alternate Gang Leader. Armed with a Meltagun (talk about overkill!), Laspistol and Chainsword, he would likely be my choice for initial leader due to his up close and personal proficiency. The Axe/Pistol/Bolter model is cheaper alternative… but not nearly as killy! Where the first model is grizzled, this guy is haughty. Straight-backed and imperious as he aims his Laspitol, this same pose would be later used on a Perry Commissar!

These two Juvies are much more dynamic than the ones I painted initially. One is armed armed with a club for a little more ‘Ooohmf’ in close quarters. The other is actually firing his trusty laspistol, not waving it in the air!

Short a single figure (as I explained earlier), this group of Gangers is ready for action. The Lasgun model is pretty much a copy of the ‘at ease’ lasgun pose memorable in so many Imperial Guard models, but the other two are actually pretty unique!

This is the only Orlock kitted out completely for close combat. While he can’t initially be armed with a sword, that’s one of the first things any Gang Leader will head to the trading post to buy for him. He is almost exactly the metal equivalent of the pistol armed plastics as you’ll see later.

This Pick and Pistol armed figure has a ton of character. The roar on his face just screams brutality and the pose is another unique one amongst the Necromunda sculpts of the day.

Finally we come to my two examples of the plastics from the boxed set. I chose to equip them in ways unique to the gang. Another Shotgun model is very handy in any Necromunda game and the close quarters figure is armed with a Stubber (perhaps with dumdums?) in order to have some variation from his Autopistol counterpart.

As this project comes to a close I’m starting to assemble my next wave of figures to go with ‘King’… the four Necromunda Scummer models and a Wyrd or two!

Here are the Brotherhood of Steel adventurers I’ve put together to start. I’ve got another 5 Brotherhood troopers to build in order to have an actual ‘squad’…but these are my Individuals.

Brotherhood Heavy Weapon’s trooper with Minigun. This one required quite a bit of chopping and repositioning, especially in the shoulders and hands. The bits are all from an old Imperial Regular, which fit perfectly on this figure and in with the Fallout theme in general. Very happy with this guy.

And finally a Brotherhood sergeant with Laser Rifle. This is just a stock build of the Brother Vinni fig… I wanted at least one to see what I am working with.

My other 5 will get built some time after I finish these. I’ll likely use a mixture of Assault Rifles and I’m going to try to build a Gatling Laster as well.

Lots of fun to paint. I’ve got three more Hasslefree Zombies I want to get painted up and then its on to painting some Cop models to go along with my Survivors and NBR Military!

In my plunge into collecting all of these figures I first managed to acquire the three Bounty Hunters. The four Scum models are on their way to me, but the Perry Ratskins are still eluding me as they go for huge sums on Ebay at this time.

My first Hired Gun was painted to match the Orlocks I am working on; I’ve nicknamed him ‘King’… I’ll let you guess why.

Of the three Bounty Hunter figs, this is my favorite (hence why he was the first to get painted!). While still a ‘flat’ figure, he oozes cool with the sideburns and pompadour as he blazes away with his Bolt Pistol at an unseen Outlaw he is going to collect on to the Guilders.

Paint-wise he is slightly more tanned than the paler Orlocks who I painted with a sort of ‘Scotsman’ complexion that I thought suited their blue-collar industrial background. ‘King’ has been around, hence the rebreather and blue striped jumpsuit that may harken back to a different life (perhaps in the Imperial Navy?). The tabard is marked with Guilder tags for confirmed capture and returns and his back pack is heavy with the gear of the trade. He is painted in bright whites and reds to have him stand out from the more subdued Orlocks and was really enjoyable to paint again after all these years.

Juvies are the young, up and coming new blood in a Necromunda gang. These sculpts in the 90′s were some of the first times Citadel designers ever explored what it would be like to be a teenager in the Grim Darkness of the Far Future.

The original Orlock gang had four Juves sculpted for it during this period. These two were the ones I originally managed to acquire and were included in the box with the rest of the 8 man gang. The term ‘Juve’ is lifted directly (like so much of Necromunda) from Judge Dredd. In this classic 2000AD series the Lawman is constantly clubbing ‘Juvies’, miscreant teenagers turned to a life of crime in the 80% unemployed world of Mega City One (Which Hive Primus on Necromunda is also clearly modeled after).

The Juves are slight and somewhat shorter than the Gangers and Heavies and for the most part come armed with up close and personal pistols and knives. I don’t entirely know what the reasoning for this was, apart from them needing the advantage of the +2 to hit at close range due to their awful Ballistics Skill!

Of the two, this one has always been my favorite, though I alway thought he should look far more excited to be about to fire a sub-machine-gun!

I have the two remaining Juves on their way here via an Ebay auction as this is written. I am however on the lookout for the HOLY GRAIL of Necromunda Orlocks, an unreleased Juve with a Lasgun.

The only Necromunda Juve sculpted by the Perry Twins and NOT armed with a pistol, this guy did not fit the design philosophy and was never released. Thanks to the Collecting Citadel Miniatures WIKI for the pic and this bit of info!

The Gangers bring up an interesting bit I’d like to discuss in 90′s miniature design, they are all ‘flats’.

Traditional metal miniatures (Lead, Pewter, ‘white’ metal) are cast in centrifugal spin plates. These two part hard-rubber molds are talced with Mold release, placed in the spinning caster and have the liquid metal poured into them while they spin. The selection of metals above are all notable because their point of liquefaction is not so hot that they damage this hard rubber. The motion of spinning ‘pulls’ the liquid metal through the vents leading off from the center of the mold, pushing the air out on the way. It cools and the two halves are then separated by hand and a ‘ring’ of miniatures is pulled out and clipped apart.

During miniature design for metal molds this it is very important that there are no ‘undercuts’. This means a recess that hooks back and can yank on the mold when it is separated, tearing it. Hence the term ‘flats’. All of the Orlocks pictured here (and most other miniatures of the era) are one piece with no undercuts. I’ll make some more comments individually so you can see what I mean. Basically, these figures all come out in one piece from the mold, and if looked at from a side view there are no ‘bits’ that would pull on the mold when they are taken out.

So far I have managed to acquire four of the original metal Perry Gangers. Two are armed with Autoguns, one with a Lasgun and my favorite of this bunch is armed with a Shotgun.

Anyone familiar with the Perry Twins work sculpting the 90′s metal Imperial guard will remember this pose. I call it ‘Ironsights’ and every single Guard regiment they sculpted had a figure doing this. It came out of the mold easily and because the face could ‘hug’ the weapon you could avoid undercutting. The Autogun in this pose is interesting in that some ‘liberties’ had to be taken with the face in order to achieve this pose. Both the reliable Lasgun and somewhat less reliable but more affordable Autogun are staples in most Necromunda gang. See as well that both figures have a back-up weapon holstered at the hip and conveniently undefined so as to be whatever type the intrepid Gamer should wish.

Another very common ‘flat’ pose of the time, this would be a ‘weapon at ease’ sculpt very common in the 90s Imperial Guard range as well. This model has some lovely detail in the face however, in particular his gruff expression and sideburns that were really fun to paint. What’s interesting about this model is that the auto gun is actually the same one used as a master when sculpting the plastic Orlocks from the Necromunda boxed set, incorporated into this metal sculpt to save time. Sculptors still do that today, using metal, resin and plastic ‘masters’ of common weapons in their sculpting to save time!

Finally we come to my favorite miniature in the bunch, and possible one of the most iconic sculpts of the whole 90s Necromunda Line. This pose is a unique one in Perry sculpting in that I cannot recall another Necromunda, Guard or human model in this position that they’ve done. He just oozes character and you can picture him, back to the wall, waiting in ambush to unleash both barrels on an unsuspecting Goliath about the round the corner. The shifty look and ‘lurking’ pose are super-effective and I’m so glad I got to paint this model again later in life.

So there are my current Gangers all painted up. Four more are to come (Sword and Autopistol, Lasgun at ease, Pick and Lasgun and Autogun Stubber) as I receive and acquire them.
